The full form of SDM is Sub Divisional Magistrate. The role of SDM is to take care of each subdivision in end-to-end functions. Based on the Government structure, SDM will be in the role of Administrative officer which is below the district level. The sub-divisional magistrate has the power of both Collector as well as Executive chairman. Hence, based on the experienced cadre, the person can either be a Junior member of the Indian Administrative Service or a senior member of the State Civil services. As well as, this person has complete control over Tahsildars and serves as a interconnect between District officers and Tahsildars. As mentioned under the Criminal code, the sub-division magistrate has various roles to perform. The major roles of SDM are Election work, Vehicle registration, Marriage registration, Issuing, and renewal of licenses, etc. Additionally, he/she has the role of Revenue function and issuing certificates like SC/ST, OBC certificates.
Sub-divisional magistrates handle the powers of executive magistrates. In his or her role, they are accountable for performing preventive sections of the code of criminal procedure. Sub-divisional magistrates are authorized to conduct inquiries into custodial curtains can be included in deaths in police lock-up and in jails, etc.
