PSUs are subdivided into PSE(Public sector Enterprises), CPSE(Central Public sector enterprises), and PSB(Public sector Banks). There are major PSUs in India. They are State Bank of India, Coal India Limited, Indian oil corporation Limited, Food Corporation of India. Additionally, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, National Thermal Power Corporation as well as Power Grid Corporation of India. And also Oil Natural Gas corporation limited and much more.

Public Sector enterprises refer to profitable ventures of the Government where user fees are charged for services performed. The tariff/fees may be market-based or financed. They are usually fully controlled and managed by the Government such as Railways, Professions, Defence Enterprises, Banks, etc.

The different types of PSU (Public sector Undertaking) are Departmental Undertaking, Statutory or Public Corporation, and Government Company. Public Sector Undertaking can be divided into Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), Public Sector Banks (PSBs), or State Level Public Enterprises (SLPEs).  There are 11 Maharatnas, 13 Navratnas and 73 Miniratnas.
