NCR stands for National Capital Region. It is a metropolitan area in India, comprising of nine districts in the states of Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. It encompasses an area of over 34,000 square kilometers and is home to over 46 million people. It is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world and is the political, administrative, and financial hub of the country.

The full form of NCR is National Capital Region which is a central planning region. It is centered upon the National Capital Territory in India. It is a metropolitan area that encompasses the entire territory of Delhi and its urban areas of neighboring states such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. That is why Delhi along with its urban areas together is known as National Capital Region. It was recommended in 1962 as the First Master Plan for Delhi so as to develop the broad area of Delhi and its surrounding towns as a metropolitan region as to extract or reduce the population from Delhi. There are around 24 districts of adjoining states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan that are under NCR. The districts are –
(a) National Capital Territory of Delhi which is the union territory of India that comprises Delhi and New Delhi.
(b) Haryana, parts which are under NCR are –
• Bhiwani
• Faridabad
• Gurgaon
• Jhajjar (Jhajjar and Bahadurgarh)
• Mahendragarh
• Panipat
• Rewari
• Rohtak
• Sonipat
• Mewat
• Palwal
• Jind
• Karnal.
(c) Uttar Pradesh, parts under NCR are –
• Baghpat
• Bulandshahr
• Gautam Buddha Nagar District (Noida and Greater Noida)
• Ghaziabad
• Muzaffarnagar
• Meerut
• Hapur.
(d) Rajasthan, parts which are under NCR are –
• Alwar
• Bharatpur.

The area of the National Capital Region is 55,083 km². The population of NCR is 4.61 crores as according to 2011. The major cities of NCR are Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, New Delhi, Noida. NCR was created in the year 1985. National Capital Region Planning Board looks after the NCR. 

India is becoming more urban. The urbanisation level of the NCR is 62.6%. The NCR consists of many rural and urban cities and towns. We can find forests, bird sanctuaries, and Aravalli ridges. Earlier, there were 23 districts, but as of 2021, there are a total of 24 districts in the NCR.
