The full form of FSSAI is Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Under the Ministry of Health and Family welfare, FSSAI, an autonomous body is governed. In India, for food safety and regulation, this FSSAI does few procedures and regulations as per Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The major purpose is to protect the health of the public by supervising food safety.

It has 8 regional offices all over India especially in Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Cochin, etc. And also, it has 72 local food testing labs in order to check the foods quality and 4 referral agencies.
There are different departments of FSSAI such as the Regulatory Compliance Division (RCD), Food Safety Management System (FSMS) Division, Risk Assessment, and Research and Development Division (RARD). FSSAI generates new knowledge by conducting continuous research and updating food safety standards. FSSAI contributes to the development of international technical standards in food.
The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India.
