DOT is referred to as for Directly observed therapy which also known as TB-DOTS, which is the name given to control tuberculosis which is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is mainly the treatment of (TB) tuberculosis, which provides the prescribed TB drugs and notices whether the patient is swallowing every dose. DOT is a critical method for drug-resistant TB, HIV-infected patients. It is noticed that 86-90% of patients take the complete DOT therapy, however, 61% of those take self-administered therapy. This helps to decrease the spread of TB to others. DOT helps to decrease the treatment failure. DOT is administered by –
• delivering the prescribed medication
• checking for side effects
• watching whether the patient is swallowing the medication
• documenting the visit
• answering questions.
DOT cannot be given by the family members, it is only given by a nurse or a supervised outreach worker from the patient’s county public health department. DOT helps the TB treatment to finish as soon as possible.
