CSIR is an acronym and stands for Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. The complete form is the CSIR – UGC NET exam. Whereas UGC stands for University Grants Commission and NET stands for National Eligibility Test and is conducted by the Government of India. The main purpose of this examination is to make the dreams of science aspirants possible who wish to start their career as an Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellow.

The candidates applying for this examination need to be graduated from a recognized university at the time of application. While for the reserved categories: OBC candidates it is Rs. 500 and for SC/ST/PwD candidates it is Rs. 250.

The examination is divided into three parts and held on the same day. 

  • Part ‘A’ General Aptitude shall be common to all subjects.
  • Part ‘B’ Subject Related is subject oriented. 
  • Part ‘C’ Scientific Concept & Knowledge is of higher order that tests candidate’s knowledge of Scientific Concepts.

The founders of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) are Arcot Ramaswamy Mudaliar and Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar. CSIR has 38 laboratories, 39 outreach centers, 3 Innovation Centres all over India. CSIR was established by the Government of India in September 1942. The location of CSIR is Anusandhan Bhawan, New Delhi.

The objectives of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) are to promote e-Governance for the purpose of empowering citizens.  promoting R&D and innovation, enhancing efficiency, and generating knowledge. The CSIR receives a 30% annual grant from Parliament through the Department of Science and Innovation which is used for development purposes.
