Intravenous therapy, IV refers to the process of giving fluids, medicine, nutrition into the blood system through the vein. It is the most effective method used in emergency situations.
Equipments used in IV Therapy
Intravenous therapy uses a tiny plastic tube that is put into the vein, a needle and plastic tube that is connected with the bag containing fluid.
How the rate of fluid is controlled?
The rate of fluid is controlled by a machine called an infusion pump. If there is a change in the rate of fluid then the machine makes a sound and warns the doctor.
When does the nurse or doctor need to be called?
One must call doctor/nurse when he/she observes: Blood in the tubeTube is pulled by the child Alarm of the pump goes off If IV is hurting your child Site of the IV looks red, etc.
Problem while IV is in the Vein
The two common problems can occur while IV is in the vein: When the plastic tube comes outside the vein and fluid goes to another skin tissue instead of vein. Child suffers from irritation around the area where the IV was put in or inside the vein.
How to care for a child with IV?
You must make sure that your child does not lie on the side of IV tube During shower, make sure that the area of IV should not get wet Make sure when your child is walking then the site of IV does not blocked
Guidelines for IV
